Urban Columns

Brad Ford Smith

3 carved & painted solid wood “columns” ea approx 8 t x 24in Dia

A unique installation of 3 minimally carved and painted salvaged tree “columns”.  This grouping of wood columns is fashioned from felled local trees that would otherwise be treated as bulk trash and simply land filled. Beam, Plank & Flitch utilizes this overlooked urban resource to create one of-a-kind works of art and furnishings.

In the design of Urban Columns, Beam, Plank &Flitch nods to the work of artists such as Louise Bourgeois and Brancusi to construct a visually bold yet minimal sculpture, quizzical in form and humorous in expression.

Each column is painted white and the subtractive carved areas are painted black with a zero VOC exterior house paint. The columns will be secured to a concrete pad using a steel dowel system and reinforced with steel collars.
